WebAug 26, 2024 · You can put uneven wear on the cylinder if you leave the piston in, especially since you cannot get all the way down to the bottom where the rings seat. Not to mention there may now be fine metal particles in the cylinder stuck between the piston and wall that you cannot get out. I had similar scoring, though not quite as bad.

You can't resurface the block without tearing down the engine , but at least take it to a machine shop and have it checked for flatness. On my LLY, when the Dealer tore it down for HG under warranty, they found where some of the fire ring had broke off and danced around the cylinder for a while.
