Rickettsia är en gramnegativ intracellulärt växande bakterie som överförs via vektorer (fästingar, loppor, löss, flugor m m) från djur och är ganska lik bakterierna Ehrlichia och Anaplasma. Traditionellt delas de olika varianterna av rickettsioser in i tyfus, fläckfeber ("spotted fever"), och "scrub typhus".
